Modern Vase for Old-Fashioned Flowers

This mass-and-void form can be enjoyed as a sculptural object or as a vase for displaying large blooms such as peonies or roses. The organic form, when viewed from above, resembles a simplified leaf form in a gentle, undulating spiral. Along the interior edge is a crescent-shaped opening, approximately 8 inches long. The form of the vase will support and enhance large heirloom showpiece blossoms, which are difficult to display properly. The opening is just large enough that a flower frog (kenzan) can be placed within the vessel to enable it to be used as a foundation for a dramatic, modern arrangement or traditional Ikebana. The material is white porcelain; the semi-gloss glaze would add the slight sheen of alabaster.

The rounded shape would be angled slightly at the crest, to enhance the organic nature of the form and capture different angles of light. This would also create a functional point where molded forms could be joined, enabling a limited-edition production in a variety of neutral materials, including metal. A slightly smaller version could be produced in a more affordable material, with the kenzan placed during the assembly of the molded parts, making it suitable for the floral market and Ikebana hobbyists, glazed in semi-gloss white or black.

Size: Approx. 12”x14”, 9” high at the highest point.
Materials: White porcelain, semi-gloss glaze for durability and water-tightness.
