Lamb, Bree: Vase Design

Objectives & Motivations: The objective of the design is to create a simple vase reminiscent of a tree stump to reflect the beauty of natural world.  The clear glass sphere adds another dimension allowing the consumer to see the plants within the form. The design has a long slender form and smooth curves. The colors and patterns of floral arrangements will compliment the grain of the wood and the palette of earth tones available. Additionally, the presence of freshly cut flowers emerging from the top of a “dead stump” speaks to the concepts of growth, decay and rebirth.

Market: The material and size of the vase will keep the product inexpensive. The aesthetic, price and durability will appeal to a middle class demographic. Targeted consumers, ranging from early 20’s to late 30’s, enjoy the look of natural, handcrafted items but have a limited budget. The product does not exhibit a level of exclusivity or delicacy and because of waterproof sealants can be used indoors as well as outdoors.

- Height: 10”

         - Base diameter: 6”

         - Inside of opening diameter: 3”

         - Thickness of wood in cylinder: 0.25”

Material, Texture & Color:

-   Ponderosa Pine: Attractive, natural grain; common wood, inexpensive; relatively soft & good for mass-production work of small scale items

-   Clear blown glass sphere

         - The overall form will be sanded down and smooth but will have shallow indentations mimicking the natural curves of a tree

      - Color options: Natural wood with Sealant; Natural, Light & Medium; Moss Green (shown), Marigold

Functional Concerns:

- Balance of Base: In order to have the vase sit evenly there will be 4 longer “root-like” pieces with 1/2" flat surfaces. Each will be at the same level and equidistantly spaced around the base. Extra weight from wood at base will add to stability of form.

- Durability: waterproof sealant applied to interior and exterior of form

- Water holding: cylinder holds water, “roots” are decorative only

- Cleaning: cylinder is wide enough to fit a small brush in to scrub and clean

- Grip: Base or stem will both be stable and comfortable to hold and move vase

 

I really wanted to do something funky and out of the ordinary. If this vase were to exist, I would want it to be made out of Pyrex glass. It would be about a foot and half tall by a foot long. There would be no flat edge on the bottom, so it would rock slightly when moved. This particular one is black and white (my favorite) but they would come in several different color combinations; mostly complimentary colors like yellow and purple, or orange and turquoise.

Tammy Staley: Vase Design

This Eco-friendly vase is designed to appeal to environmentally sensitive individuals or restaurant owners who appreciate a unique product that aligns with their ecological values. No two vases are the same. Each is handmade, unique, and 100% recyclable. Paper types can be chosen to emphasize a particular theme or mood.

The vase begins as a 12” x 12” piece of handmade paper. It is starched then formed, and is held together with a few small drops of wax. A 3” x 2” piece of thin bamboo is inserted at the base to help the vase hold its form. Finally, wax is melted and applied to the inside of the vase covering bottom and extending two inches up the sides to provide structural support a water proof seal. Up to 2 inches of water can then be added.  Final dimensions are approx 8" in height and 4" in width.

Wendi Fox: Vase design

Objective: My idea for this vase came from challenging the typical shape of a vase. The object covers the surface spread out like a desolate landscape.  It is more about the sculptural quality of the object rather than the object that it is meant to hold.  The vase could be filled with nothing and still be a center piece on a table, or be lush, filled with short cuttings or living plants.  It is reminiscent of a desert "landscape" but could be transformed by the plants it contains.  This vase could sit in the middle of the table or even on the floor, and is designed with a modern simplistic household in mind.  
Materials dimensions and cost:  The vase is white and is made of a matte porcelain.  Its dimensions are 3 feet long by 1 1/2 feet wide by 6 inches tall if it were a floor piece.  It could be scaled down for a table piece.  The smaller vase would cost approximately $400.

"Proposal Vase"

"The Proposal" vase is elegantly designed to impart a personal, narrative touch of class to a common household item.  Intended to hold only one stem, there is a small reservoir for water in the lower three fingers of the hand.  The dimensions of this white, glazed cast-porcelain piece are the same as the designer's right hand and stands approx. 4" tall.  Made in a limited initial run of 10,000 units, "The Proposal" will be re-released each summer in a run of 5,000 units. Priced in the range of $250-$350 and available at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf's, Horchow and Saks, the vase is aimed at the bride-to-be who has everything, or at any woman who wants to add a touch of the romantic to her home.

Holiday, Megan- Vase Design

This design is intended for a middle class family’s household and would probably be found in chain stores like Pier 1 and Crate & Barrel.  Mass production of this vase will start at 500,000 and if product shows to be popular production will increase. The product is 12 X 8 inches. The materials are clear glass and brushed stainless steel. The stainless steel and glass were chosen because both can be easily recycled, and both are made with recycled material, making the product ‘green’.  The only color will be the gray/silver of the stainless steel.

            The vase is designed to appeal to the modern trend of minimalist design and brining nature into the home. The design’s focus is to create an object that allows man made products and natural objects, like flowers, to compliment each other. It is a remark on keeping the world ‘green’ while keeping in mind that the consumer’s need of a simple, aesthetically pleasing design that can fit into any home. The glass section is for putting flowers around in a decorative circular. The glass keeps the stems visible.  The circular design allows for easier flower arranging and is a common shape seen in households, so the vase should compliment the home smartly.  The inner-brushed stainless steel cylinder is for putting other flowers, candies, or other decorative elements the consumer wishes to add to the vase. The glass can be easily removed from the stainless steel base and can be easily cleaned with a dishrag and soap.
